'The Roots Beneath' - The Cedars, Hahndorf
Details: 94W x 125H x 5D original Acrylic painting with gloss varnish finish on premium gallery wrapped canvas. Framed in Oak
The Roots Beneath is a painting grounded in ancestry, memory, and the quiet calling of place. Inspired by a hidden path on the grounds of The Cedars in Hahndorf, the home of renowned Artist Hans Heysen, this piece explores the unseen forces that shape us.
While walking through the bushland Heysen once wandered daily, I felt an unshakable connection to the land, as though something deeper was stirring beneath the surface. There was a presence in the path, a sense that it had held generations before me, a familiarity.
Hahndorf has always held something strange and sacred for me. Despite my strong internal compass, the main street leaves me disoriented every time, as if time folds in on itself there, or some invisible thread is being tugged beneath my feet. I’ve since discovered that my grandmother was born in the Hahndorf Academy, when it served as a birthing suite in 1926. That knowledge only deepens my belief that something ancestral lives in this land, something I don’t need to fully understand to feel.
This work sits within my Close to Home collection, reflecting places that are not only geographically close, but emotionally and spiritually resonant. The Roots Beneath invites the viewer to pause and consider the unseen, the histories, instincts, and connections that anchor us, even when we don’t yet know why.
